Listen: Wayne Bennett bans Triple M over tacky comedy skit on Brisbane radio

Wayne Bennett has barred the NRL’s broadcast rights holders after his ex-wife Trish and current partner Dale Cage were targeted as part of a ‘comedy’ skit. LISTEN to the deleted segment.

Wayne Bennett is at war with Triple M following an offensive stunt that has backfired for the NRL’s radio kings in the build-up to Friday’s clash with the Broncos.

Rugby league’s greatest coach has banned the NRL’s broadcast rights holders after his ex-wife Trish and current partner Dale Cage were mentioned as part of a comedy skit which exploded on Brisbane breakfast radio.

Bennett’s marriage breakdown to Trish and Cage’s breast size were raised.

The network has apologised to Bennett - privately and publicly - but that hasn’t stopped the Souths coach refusing to do pre or post-game interviews with Triple M for this week’s Broncos clash at Suncorp Stadium.

The fallout occurred in the wake of Souths’ loss to Cronulla last Saturday night, with Bennett shutting down a reporter after he was asked about the prospects of the Rabbitohs winning the wooden spoon.

“I knew someone would ask that question ... I’m not answering that, OK?,” Bennett snapped at the reporter.

Triple M’s popular Brisbane breakfast show, featuring hosts Greg Martin, Dan Anstey and Margaux Parker, the wife of Broncos legend Corey, decided to pick up Bennett’s sound bite as part of a tongue-in-cheek segment.

But the segment took a turn when the hosts made references to Bennett’s ex-wife Trish and current partner Cage, which went down like a lead balloon with the Souths super coach.

In a mock interview, ‘Marto’ and Margaux fired a series of ‘questions’ at Bennett, each time using his sound grab from the press conference as a response.

Marto kicks off the two-minute satire by saying: “Well, he (Bennett) didn’t know I was about to enter the media room. I got there late ... I said, ‘Hey mate, remind me Wayne, ‘Why did you drop Wally from the Broncos’.

The program then repeatedly played Bennett’s sound bite.

“I knew someone would ask that question.”

Marto: “Why did you leave Trish mate?”

“I knew someone would ask that question.”

Marto: “Darius (Boyd) and you ... I don’t understand that relationship.”

“I knew someone would ask that question.”

Anstey: “Is it true that you, Greg Martin from Triple M and Clint Eastwood are the exact same person Wayne?”

“I knew someone would ask that question.”

Margaux: “How big are Dale’s boobs Wayne?”

“I knew someone would ask that question.”

Following that question, a member of the Triple M team is heard to say to Margaux: “That’s ridiculous. That is so rude of you.”

It is understood Bennett’s partner heard the segment live and called Triple M management immediately to make an official complaint.

Parker later called Bennett, who coached her husband Corey at the Broncos, and apologised, which the coach is understood to have accepted.

The show also offered an apology on air.

Contacted by Sport Confidential, Bennett said he was aware of the offensive remarks towards his ex-wife and current partner.

“That’s personal stuff, so I’m not going to go into that,” he said.

“You talk to them (Triple M).

“If they want to say something about their behaviour, you talk to them, but I’m not saying anything more.”

Parker declined to comment on the segment, the contents of which had been heard by the NRL and South Sydney bosses.

“It’s been a private matter for Wayne to deal with,” Souths CEO Blake Solly said.

“We understand it’s been dealt with.

“Wayne has the club’s total support.”

It is the second incident between Triple M and the Rabbitohs.

Last year, Souths superstar Latrell Mitchell came under fire after he dropped the ‘F-bomb’ numerous times on the network following a post-game interview at Suncorp Stadium.

Triple M weren’t guilty of any wrongdoing, but Mitchell took offence to the criticism and went on a self-imposed media ban.

It’s uncertain if Bennett’s ban will extend for the rest of the season and carry over into next year.
