Jarome Luai’s father pulls the pin on social media after contract ‘banter’ sends Tigers fans into a spin

Jarome Luai’s father has been forced into early social media retirement, after a Instagram post over the four-time premiership winners’ future at the Wests Tigers sent fans into a spin.

Tigers avoiding Luai's "get out" clause

Jarome Luai’s father has joked he is going into social media retirement after an Instagram post sent Wests Tigers fans into a spin.

Martin Luai took to social media immediately after the Tigers were thrashed 64-0 by Melbourne on Sunday, seemingly teasing about a get-out clause in the four-time premiership winner’s deal at Concord.

Luai’s father deleted the post on Sunday evening but not before the Instagram story caused a stir online and among the Tigers faithful.

On Monday, Martin took to social media again, this time joking that the ‘banter’ had landed him in hot water with his wife and he would have to resort to Bebo, one of the first social media platforms ever launched in the early 2000s.

Unfortunately for Martin, Bebo has been defunct since 2022.

“Sorry friends and family, my wife has banned me from further banter on Insta... #isbebostillathing?,” Martin joked on Instagram.

Luai signed a lucrative deal with the Tigers worth $6 million dollars until the end of 2029, but it has since been revealed the 28-year old has a get-out clause in his favour, making him a free agent from November 1.

“Get out clause activated,” Martin posted on Sunday alongside a face palm and suss eyes emoji.

While Martin insists the post was lighthearted in nature, the timing of the post immediately after the heavy loss at the hands of the Storm left plenty of Tigers’ fans feeling nervous about Luai’s future at the club.

In a statement to Channel 9, Martin said the original post was nothing more than ‘banter’ and that he was not forced to remove the post by the club or Luai.

“It was a bit of banter between family and friends and somehow got into the hands of media, who screenshot it and sent it to Romey’s management,” Martin Luai said.

“I was told about it – not from anyone from the club – and, on my own accord, as I was made aware of the media’s intentions to make it public, I removed it from socials.”

Luai has maintained he is committed to the club, recently publicly backing coach Benji Marshall in the wake of the Lachlan Galvin saga.

The playmaker has also been buoyant about the direction that the club is heading and despite the disappointing result on Sunday the Tigers have secured five wins after 10 Rounds, compared to just six wins for all of season 2024.

But there is no doubt the get-out clause in Luai’s contract will leave Tigers fans nervous.

Especially after Luai’s halves partner Galvin dropped a contract bombshell only last month, revealing he has no intention of extending his time at the Tigers beyond 2026.
