RUGBY LEAGUE GOLD COAST COACH’S FINAL 13 FOR TEAM OF THE DECADE
1. CLINT BARENDS, TUGUN
Narrowing down a decade of players into one team was a difficult task and some brilliant players were left in the scrapheap, Barends said.
“A few scraped in on longevity but I tried to pick that (quality),” he said.

“There have been some good players in the comp like Preston Campbell, Mortimer and them, but I felt the way I picked was guys who played at least three seasons.
“I don’t get to watch week-in, week-out, but I do see some dangerous blokes.”
Barends selected five players from the Seahawks but only coached three of them in his three years in charge.
2. MARTIN GRIESE, CURRUMBIN
Tugun’s era of dominance from 2013 onwards was richly rewarded by the Eagles boss with 11 players with ties to the Seahawks scoring his votes.
Consensus selections Jamie Anderson from Runaway Bay and Waka Wanahi were too good to ignore.
3. MATT FOSTER, BURLEIGH
The Englishman took up the reins at the Bears in 2015 and has chosen to select only players active in the second half of the decade.
“I’ve based my team around players I have coached and coached against since 2015,” Foster said.
“These guys were always on the tip sheet and could do things to influence games in their favour.”
4. STEVE DOWD, SOUTHPORT
The veteran coach said he had chosen to select only players who had been involved in the competitions for three seasons or more.
Eight of Dowd’s picks had ties to Tugun Seahawks, ahead of Southport who had six selections.
5. NICK GLEESON, RUNAWAY BAY
Toughness and intelligence were factors Gleeson rated highly, while experience in the Intrust Super Cup was another commonality shared by his selections.
Eight of his 13 selections had ties to Runaway Bay.
