HE has been likened to freakish Roosters talent Latrell Mitchell but Greg Inglis is the man Treymain Spry idolised – and now he has moved a step closer to following in his footsteps.
The impressive centre has been named in the Queensland under-20 team – along with fellow Titans-contracted ace Tanah Boyd – to take on NSW in a State of Origin curtain-raiser at ANZ Stadium on July 10.
Spry has previously represented Queensland at under-18 level and cherished that opportunity.
“That was a cool experience playing before State of Origin, just going out and versing the Blues,” he recalled.
“It’s always good to get picked for Queensland.”
As a kid growing up, Spry always took joy in watching Inglis give the Blues defence nightmares.
“Just his ability to do what he does and how he goes about the game was really good to watch,” he said.
An Ipswich product who was previously signed by the Roosters, Spry has spent 2019 plying his trade in senior football as part of Tweed’s Intrust Super Cup squad.
He still lives in Ipswich, making for a commute to training at Piggabeen Sports Complex of up to two hours each way pending traffic, but has thrived on the challenge.
In 14 games, Spry has eight tries and 36 tackle busts in a sign of his promise.
“I’m just trying to get better each week. It’s a big step from 20s to Cup so it’s good,” he said.
As for his chances of getting a taste of the NRL this year? “That would be good but I just want to focus on playing consistent footy in Cup and my chance will come.”
