Gold Coast Titans players Ryley Jacks and Phillip Sami promise better showing against Dragons

If the Titans are to salvage something from a torrid 2019 NRL season, now is the time to act.

IF the Titans are to salvage something from a torrid 2019 NRL season, now is the time to act.

Gold Coast’s best chance of both dodging the wooden spoon and setting a new record for least wins in a year will come with a pair of fixtures against 14th-placed St George Illawarra.

The first of those falls this Saturday at Jubilee Stadium, six days after a 58-6 defeat to the Roosters described by winger Phillip Sami as “very embarrassing.” The second is four weeks later in a final round clash at Cbus Super Stadium.

The Dragons are in the midst of a five-game skid that has seen them plummet down the standings to be level with Canterbury on six wins, two ahead of the Titans.

Between their two meetings with the Red V, far tougher propositions await for Gold Coast in the form of hosting in-form Parramatta and then away matches against Melbourne and Newcastle.

“This is very important for us if we want to get off the bottom,” halfback Ryley Jacks said.

“We have got to sort of put the weekend behind us and really start focusing on the Dragons. Hopefully we can go out there and put a much better performance in.”

The Titans have been scratching their heads as to why their hard work on the training paddock – especially since Craig Hodges took the reins from Garth Brennan – has not translated into competitiveness on game day.

“Maybe when stuff goes against us, like an error or a penalty, our response isn’t good enough so that’s one thing there but there is a lot of things that we need to fix,” he said.

Sami promised a better display for fans that are increasingly becoming disgruntled with the perceived lack of effort on show.

“They go out of their own way buying memberships and it’s very disappointing for us to put that performance on,” he said.

“We are training really hard and it just hasn’t shown on the field yet.

“I think this week’s game is very important for us to show the fans and the members that we are training very hard and we can put a great performance on.”
