“I WAS watching and the boys lacked effort. I’m coming back this week to bring that energy and that effort that we have been missing for the past couple of weeks.”
Those are the words of Jai Arrow that should have Titans fans pumped as the Queensland Origin workhorse makes his return from a near two-month injury lay-off, a week after they were punished 58-6 by defending premiers Sydney.
KELLY: WHY I HAVE ‘MAD RESPECT’ FOR GORDON
Above any other player in Gold Coast’s ranks, it has been Arrow who has regularly displayed the kind of accountability warranted during the club’s worst season on record.
He still needs to pull up well from a promising Wednesday training session to take his place against St George Illawarra on Saturday but is fired up to make his mark.
The commitment of Titans players has been questioned in their six-game losing streak; Arrow will leave nothing in the tank against the Red V, even if he is on limited minutes.
“I think Hodgo (coach Craig Hodges) just has me in the role at the moment to play the first 20-ish and then maybe come on with about 25 to go,” Arrow said.
“That’s obviously the plan but some things don’t go to plan so we will just have to wait and see.
“Dragons, they’re not playing with confidence, just like us, so if we can play good footy this week and roll into the next five weeks, then hopefully we can win a few games and get ourselves off the bottom of the ladder.”
Who can grab the upper hand in the first 20 minutes at Jubilee Stadium could be pivotal.
“If we can come out and complete and starve them of the ball, then hopefully we can gas them and eventually put some points on them and put them to bed,” Arrow said.
