Gold Coast Titans keen to sign Chris Grevsmuhl

THE Titans have space in their salary cap for the upcoming season and coach Neil Henry is on the hunt for players — including forward Chris Grevsmuhl.

THE Gold Coast Titans are looking to bring aspiring Maroons forward Chris Grevsmuhl back to the NRL.

The Courier-Mail can reveal the Titans have been in contact with Grevsmuhl, who quit the NRL last year to deal with personal issues.

At his best, Grevsmuhl is a punishing backrower with an excellent ability to break the line.

He played 29 NRL matches for South Sydney before linking with Penrith midway through 2016.

Grevsmuhl left the Panthers suddenly in November last year after being granted a release on compassionate grounds.

He must satisfy NRL requirements before he can return to the game and the Titans are in the mix to sign the 23-year-old this season if he can do so.

Grevsmuhl has been part of Queensland’s Emerging Origin camps and Maroons coach Kevin Walters has kept in contact with him during his break.

“I’ve been in regular contact with him,” Walters said.

“He’d like to be playing footy but he’s got to get through a few things with the NRL.

“Once that is sorted he will be back. I expect to see him playing at some stage this year.

“He’s got plenty to give. He’s only come into the NRL in the last couple of years.

“Hopefully he can get himself sorted off the field then get back in the NRL.”

The Titans have space in their salary cap for the upcoming season and coach Neil Henry is on the hunt for players.

They have been unable to strike a deal with the Roosters to bring Dale Copley to the Gold Coast, although the move could still eventuate, and Tigers centre Tim Simona has also been mooted as possible option.

Warriors prop Albert Vete remains on their hit-list for 2018 after the club secured Ryan James for a further four years.

The Titans are also deep in discussions with promising Super League forward Joe Greenwood.

The 23-year-old is a highly-rated forward at St Helens who is looking to test himself in the NRL.

The Titans have extended the contract of young gun Max King for a further two years following interest from a number of Sydney clubs.

King, who is playing in the Auckland Nines this weekend, has been elevated into the NRL squad and COO Tony Mestrov said the Gold Coast held high hopes for the local product.

“He was our under-20s player of the year (in 2016),” he said.

“He’s a big body with a really nice offload and good motor to play big minutes.

“His work ethic and character is outstanding. He is a tremendous young man.

“We think he is going to go a long way and has a big future.”
