A senior police officer is under investigation and his son – also a police officer – has been sacked after a night at the footy has turned horribly wrong.

The officer has been terminated after throwing a projectile towards an NRL referee at a match in Sydney recently.

The probationary constable was dismissed from the police force following an investigation into the poor behaviour of two off-duty officers following an incident at a Sydney Roosters match at Allianz Stadium in April.

One of the officers has been sacked while the other continues to be investigated. It is understood the pair are a father and son duo with the father a high-ranking officer.

“An officer has been issued an infringement notice following an investigation into an incident involving two off duty police officers on Thursday 18 April, at a football match in Moore Park,” a police spokeswoman said.

“The probationary constable was dismissed from the NSW Police.

“An internal investigation into the incident continues.”

The two officers – as well as a third person – were banned from attending sporting matching or events at any Venues NSW ground for up to two years.

Venues NSW control the best stadiums across the state including Allianz Stadium, Sydney Cricket Ground, Accor Stadium, CommBank Stadium, WIN Stadium and McDonald Jones Stadium.

The NRL have also issued ban notices to the two officers which would forbid them from attending any matches at any venue across the country.

A Venues NSW spokesman confirmed last month that the trio had been banned for “offensive behaviour”.

A projectile was thrown towards the match officials as they walked from the field in the aftermath of the Melbourne and Roosters game which the Storm won 18-12.

Veteran referee Ashley Klein – who was in charge during Wednesday’s State of Origin match where he sent Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii from the field – controlled the game. Klein nor any of his fellow match officials were hit by any objects and left the venue uninjured.

The match was overshadowed by contentious bunker rulings.

A similar incident occurred in Newcastle earlier just seven days earlier where an object – potentially an E-Cigarette or a vape – was hurled towards the match officials narrowly missing the targets in the aftermath.

It is understood there was insufficient video evidence to pursue any action against the offender in Newcastle.
