Canberra have entered the final stages of negotiations with Newcastle hooker Jayden Brailey as they brace for a call from the former Knights skipper on his playing future.

The Raiders are clear frontrunners to secure Brailey, who also attracted interest from North Queensland and Manly after entering the final year of his deal on November 1.

It is understood that the Knights reluctantly told the 28-year-old that they were not in position to make him an offer for next season and the Raiders have been his most aggressive suitor as they look to bring in an experienced head to help with the development of Owen Pattie.

Brailey has already held talks with Raiders head coach Ricky Stuart and the club has tabled an attractive bid to lure him to the nation’s capital.

The ball is now in Brailey’s court as he prepares to notify Canberra of his intentions for next season.

Brailey has played more than 130 games in the NRL, having started his career at Cronulla before moving to the Knights.

He missed a large chunk of the 2023 season with a knee injury but bounced back last year to play 23 games for the Knights as they finished in 8th spot and qualified for the finals.

He played off the interchange bench in round one as the Knights opened their season with a win over the Wests Tigers last Friday – Phoenix Crossland started the game in the No.9 jersey.

The Knights also have youngster Matt Arthur in their top 30 squad for the next three seasons, meaning they are flushed with depth at the hooker position.

Hence the decision to give Brailey the green light to leave at the end of 2025.
