New Brisbane Broncos coach Kelvin Wright has backed Tarryn Aiken to succeed at NRLW level – and he would know better than most.

NEW Brisbane Broncos coach Kelvin Wright has backed Tarryn Aiken to succeed at NRLW level – and he would know better than most.

Wright coaches Aiken at SEQ division one club Tweed, with the halfback taking just a handful of senior games to convince the Broncos that she is the real deal.

The 19-year-old comes from a representative touch football background and was even in the mix to earn a State of Origin debut for Queensland later this month.

Instead, she has an NRLW premiership defence to look forward to at the Broncos.

“Probably the biggest compliment is that she makes other players around her look good,” said Wright, who has taken the Brisbane coaching reins from incumbent Paul Dyer.

“She works extremely hard on her game and puts in a lot of extras.

“There’s still a lot of areas that she is going to have to keep working on but it’s really exciting for her and I know the Tweed Seagulls are really happy for her and really proud of her.”

As for his own opportunity at the helm, the former New Zealand Ferns mentor is looking forward to the challenge.

“I’m really happy and honoured to be able to join such a great club as the Broncos,” Wright said.

“I couldn’t ask for a better platform really. The staff and players did a fantastic job last year so we have got a great base and obviously we’ll look to make a few changes but really the platform is there.

“We’re expecting the competition to be a lot tougher … there’s plenty of hard work ahead so I’ll certainly be putting all my effort into it.”
