Braidon Burns is set to make his debut for North Queensland after Cowboys winger Kyle Feldt was ruled out of his side’s must-win Magic Round clash with the Rabbitohs.
Cowboys coach Todd Payten confirmed Feldt had not been able to prove his fitness after picking up an ankle injury last week.
“Kyle Feldt is out and Braidon Burns will come onto that right wing, other than that we’re all good to go,” Payten said.
“He jammed his ankle last week. He had a chance to commit to this week and just fell short.”
North Queensland signed Burns early last week on a deal that will see him stay at the club until at least the end of the 2025 season.
The 27-year-old outside back offers versatility and experience with 62 NRL appearances to his name.
Burns made his Queensland Cup debut with the Northern Pride last weekend against the PNG Hunters, scoring two tries in a 30-12 defeat.
Payten said it was a “solid” performance.
“He’s been on the ground here for a couple of weeks. It’s a little bit of a different system in terms of edge movements and decisions, so getting up to speed for that will be just a little bit of a challenge at times but he’s a smart kid,” Payten said.
“He’s got his head down, he’s working really hard and he’s a good kid to have around the group.”
Burns will have a tough task on his hands defending South Sydney’s fearsome left-edge attack alongside Viliami Vailea, Jeremiah Nanai and Chad Townsend.
