‘Big Red’ Brad Meyers one of Titans’ foundation greats

BRAD Meyers may have played for both southeast Queensland clubs but will always have a place in his heart for the Titans.

BRAD Meyers may have pulled on a Broncos jersey in the recent All Stars challenge between former Brisbane and Gold Coast players but he will always have a place in his heart for the Titans.

A foundation player, Meyers returned from the English Super League to link with the Titans for their NRL debut in 2007 and played 75 games for the club until his retirement in 2011.

The man known as “Big Red” became a quick fan favourite on the Gold Coast as he helped the club to a maiden finals appearance in 2009 and within one game of the grand final in 2010.

“The first season I did my knee, so it wasn’t the fondest of memories,” Meyers said.

“But being able to make those finals for the first time and just trying to build something that would last (are my proudest achievements at the Titans).

“It was good to be a part of the beginning. With the Coast coming back in (to the competition) again, we wanted to build something strong and we did that there.

“Obviously it’s been a bit of a struggle lately but they’ve got guys here that can do it, they need to build it back up again.”

A former Australian Apprenticeships Ambassador for the federal government, Meyers completed his carpentry ticket while playing in the NRL and is still involved in the building game, working for Condev Construction on the Gold Coast.

“I’m a site foreman with them, so that keeps me busy,” Meyers said.

Meyers got to reconnect with some of his NRL mates during the recent All Stars match at Cbus Super Stadium while turning out for Brisbane, the club from which he represented Queensland and Australia.

But it’s the mates he made that matter most in the end.

“It’s not playing the game, it’s more catching up with everyone,” he said.

“Hanging out with guys like Presto and Princey, they’re the things you hold the fondest.”
