The Titans’ fight for survival has won support from an unlikely source.

THE Titans have won support from an unlikely source, with polarising former NSW coach Phil Gould claiming the NRL “basket case” has the ingredients to thrive.

Gold Coast’s future in the league has again come under the spotlight amid reports that Channel 9 is pushing for a second Brisbane team to coincide with a new TV rights deal in 2023.

That leaves the underperforming Titans vulnerable given another season of sorry results which resulted in the dismissal of coach Garth Brennan.

Yet Gould has bucked the trend of cheap shots being fired at the Titans, admitting while they have got things wrong there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“Gold Coast is a basket case but it should work,” he told 100% Footy.

“Propping them up is not the answer.

“The AFL invested in GWS and when they win a premiership that will change things.

“With us (the NRL) we put a team somewhere and when they don’t go any well (we say) ‘that was a mistake’.

“They (the Titans) are burning their money because they haven’t got it right from the start.

“They need to get it right but they’re not going to get it right ... until people say ‘nothing works on the Gold Coast’. Well something has got to work on the Gold Coast.”

Gould offered the voice of reason in response to critics.

“People tend to comment on about 10 seconds of thought,” he said of relocation talk.

“If we’re going to move a club they need to last forever.

“We need to do a lot more research.”
