Analysis: 50 of the best Queensland schoolboy footballers from 2019, part four

IT WAS another spectacular year of schoolboy football throughout Queensland in 2019 and with all the action done and dusted, The Courier-Mail has gone back through the footage to analyse 50 of the best players throughout the state.

Nic Darveniza, Andrew Dawson, and Lachlan Grey were on the ground throughout the year for the likes of the Langer Cup, the GPS Rugby, and the AIC Rugby League, and had a sideline view of some of our best teenage talents.

Their experience coupled with couriermail.com.au’s exclusive livestream replays has resulted in this list of our future footballing stars.

But it’s important to note – this list is not the gospel truth of which students are going to make it and which players will not.

The top 10 will be ranked, but the other 40 players are not in order and while they currently look like they have the best shot to play professionally, there are hundreds of teenagers unlucky to miss out.

We will be revealing a new list each day before concluding with the top 10 on Sunday.

In the meantime, here’s the next 10 players who made a mark in 2019.

HARRY VELLA

(St Joseph’s Nudgee College)

THE Sunshine Coast product is a muscular workhorse whose play has been at the heart of Nudgee’s back-to-back Premierships. The Queensland Reds have selected wisely added the Sunshine Coast product to their Under-18 Academy.

ZANE NONGGORR

(The Southport School)

THE TSS skipper is a three-year starter for TSS who trimmed down 25 kilograms over the offseason. With greater fitness, the rumbling prop has starred for the Reds Academy and for school.

MAC GREALY

(Downlands College)

THE Downlands College fullback’s eerie similarities to Kalyn Ponga at the same age has been the talk of Toowoomba this season. Grealy’s heroics in Toowoomba’s biggest annual grudge match won his side the O’Callaghan Cup for the first time in five years.

JOSH BEVAN

(Palm Beach Currumbin)

THE Palm Beach Currumbin backrower is no stranger to NRL attention. Having trained with Gold Coast and Brisbane’s elite development programs, Bevan signed a two-year deal with Sydney Roosters at just 14-years-old and has gone from strength to strength since then. Won a junior national state championship with Tweed Heads this year and will don the tricolour in due course.

TITI NOFOAGATOTOA

(St Joseph’s Nudgee College)

A HULKING ballrunner whose high workrate in attack carried Nudgee to a top three finish in GPS rugby in 2019. He’s already starting for the Reds Under-18 Academy but will return for his final school season in 2020.

ATIVALU LISATI

(Ipswich SHS)

TALK about a bolt from the blue. Lisati shot to fame during this year’s Allan Langer Cup after starring for upset-merchants Ipswich SHS and has already been snaffled by Penrith. Predominately a second rower, Lisati also boasts speed to burn - he hit 36.83kmph chasing down Keebra Park speedster Reece Walsh - and could easily play in the centres.

Wavell State High School representative forwards Tuku Hau Tapuha and Jayden Clarkson.

TUKU HAU TAPUHA

(Wavell SHS)

TOWERING middle forward with an enormous future. Sydney Roosters spotted him first and their decision to snap him up is proving a good one early on. Scarily mobile for a big man, Tapuha’s ability to bend the line and offload makes him a serious risk for opposition defences. One of Wavell SHS best prospects in recent years.

JOJO FIFITA

(The Southport School)

THE 16-year-old TSS centre will start for both the Reds Under-16s and Under-18s Academy this year. Scored eight tries in seven matches, with 69 tackles at 92% - Fifita is some player.

HAMISO TABUAI-FIDOW

(Kirwan SHS)

THE Cairns-born speedster was first scouted by the Cowboys in 2017 after scoring 14 tries in seven games at rugby union school Brisbane Grammar. Since moving home, the Cowboys signing has won the Mal Meninga Cup player of the year, a national title with Kirwan SHS and man of the match honours for the Australian Schoolboys against the Kiwis.

REECE WALSH

(Keebra Park SHS)

AN injury-riddled season prevented Walsh from reaching his lofty heights but the flying fullback still turned plenty of heads in 2019. A Maroons’ U18 debut saw Walsh score a try in QLD’s droughtbreaking win while the speedster shone was a Mal Meninga Cup standout for eventual premiers Tweed Heads. On Brisbane’s list and Red Hill will be eager to keep it that way.
