NBA Draft 2022: Dyson Daniels picked at No. 8 by New Orleans, Paolo Banchero No. 1

Young Australian Dyson Daniels’ basketball dreams came true at the NBA Draft as his name was called out at No.8.

Australia’s Dyson Daniels has been selected at No. 8 over all by the New Orleans Pelicans in today’s NBA Draft.

Duke’s Paolo Banchero went at No. 1 overall to the Orlando Magic (scroll down for the rolling coverage as it happened).

Daniels, at just 19, is the talk of Australian basketball as of 11am (AEST) this morning. Hailing from Bendigo in Victoria, Daniels has been picked in the top 10 of the NBA draft after an outstanding NBA G League season which saw him earning the All-Star Rising Stars game.

In the guard position, he averaged more than 11 points and six rebounds per game for the G League Ignite. Coming from excellent basketball heritage - with his dad Ricky a gun player himself - the teenager stands at more than two metres. Daniels went at No. 8 following Josh Giddey’s selection at No.6 by Oklahoma City in last year’s draft.

NBA Draft as it happened

3.19pm: As we complete our coverage it is worth mentioning that two more NBL next stars are bound for the NBA with Luke Travers (pick 56 to Cleveland Cavaliers) and Hugo Besson (pick 58 to Milwaukee Bucks) both drafted in the second round. Repeating the earlier news that Dyson Daniels was picked at No. 8 and is headed to the New Orleans Pelicans.

Travers and Besson join Ousmane Dieng (No. 11 to Oklahoma City) as the three NBL next stars picked up in the first two rounds.

3.15pm: The first and second rounds of the NBA draft have been completed in New York. See draft order for 1 to 58 in this year’s Draft.

2.26pm: A proud Australian went at No. 8 in today’s NBA Draft.

1.00pm: Summarising a massive morning. The No. 1 pick was a surprise with the widely touted Jabari Smith Jr. missing top spot and Orlando Magic taking 19-year-old power forward Paolo Banchero. Then the moment all Australian basketball fans had been waiting for, at just before 11am on the east coast, and a little earlier for those in the west, Bendigo’s Dyson Daniels was picked at No. 8 by the New Orleans Pelicans.

Two places behind Adelaide’s Josh Giddey to Oklahoma City Thunder in 2021, who went on to do things never seen before.

12.58pm: The first round has ended.

12.55pm: Nearing the end of the first round.

No. 1 contenders

Among the leading contenders tipped to be picked at No. 1 were Auburn University’s Jabari Smith Jr., Chet Holmgren from Gonzaga and Duke rising star Paolo Banchero.

There is still not yet any clear consensus as to who will be the number one draft pick in 2022. Smith Jr. is widely touted as the man and, according to NBA chatter, Holmgren is favoured at No. 2.

As of this week, Orlando were still yet to determine which they would go and ended up going with Banchero.
