Chaz Mostert enhanced his championship credentials after a strong show in practice, but it’s away from the track he’s had the most ‘beautiful time’. Find out more inside.

'Unbelievable!': Scenes as Supercars hits Taupo

Ford star Chaz Mostert has opened up on the “beautiful time” in his life after celebrating the arrival of his baby daughter late last month.

After enhancing his Supercars championship credentials when he topped a trio of Fords in opening practice at Taupo on Friday, Mostert said he was relishing the early days of fatherhood.

Mostert and his partner Riarne Marwood welcomed baby Everly Rose in late March after the couple suffered personal heartbreak last year.

Marwood revealed last May the pair’s first child, Hazel Lola, had been still born at 22 weeks after a routine scan uncovered an issue with the baby’s heart.

The following month the couple announced their engagement.

Mostert said on Friday Everly’s arrival had been an amazing time and admitted he had found it hard being away from home and his family to race in New Zealand this weekend.

“It’s obviously amazing, but I feel a little guilty, I’m not going to lie, going away to work while you’ve got a little young family at home,” Mostert said.

“I’m lucky I’ve got an amazing partner that is carrying the workload at home at the moment, I have a whole new respect for mums out there, what every mum has to go through because as a dad you feel like you contribute about 10 per cent, definitely in the first six months as everybody tells me.

“Obviously my job is to come here and keep trying to win races and keep focused on that, but it’s pretty amazing when you see a little human at home.

“Thank god she looks like her mum because she is very lucky in that.

“It’s a beautiful time for us. A little bit (of) sleepless nights, but that’s a lot more for Ri than what it is for me at the moment. But it’s cool.”

The leading Ford driver in the Supercars championship standings, sitting third behind Triple Eight pair Will Brown and Broc Feeney, Mostert was the early pacesetter as the field hit the track for the first time in Taupo on Friday.

The Walkinshaw Andretti United star was fastest in opening practice ahead of Kiwi Matt Payne (Grove Racing) and Dick Johnson Racing’s Will Davison.

Mostert predicted racing “chaos” this weekend with the differing grip around the track.

“Ninety minutes around here is pretty crazy. The surface takes me back to the old school Perth, or even a little bit worse to be honest,” Mostert said.

“It gives you a little bit of hope in patches around here with a couple of patches and you go ‘That feels good’ and gripped up and then all of a sudden you get to the next corner and you blaze past the apex.

“It’s always nice as a driver to experience a new track … this weekend is going to be super interesting.

“Watching cars slide around from the start of the stint to the end of the stint it’s going to be chaos, and chaos is entertainment so it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
