Being “clumsy” rather than careless has saved Giants star Jeremy Cameron from match review penalty.

But Bulldogs quick Will Hayes will miss Round 1 after being charged for a sling tackle and a Tigers youngster will miss a fortnight of AFL Women’s.

Cameron collided with Tiger Kane Lambert in Sunday’s pre-season clash, with Lambert concussed in the incident with a loose ball up for grabs.

The Giants forward fell on Lambert, with his knee making contact with the Tiger’s head.

But match review officer Michael Christian deemed while there was high contact made, Cameron would be free play in Round 1.

“(I) didn’t believe or couldn’t be satisfied that it reached our threshold for carelessness, and therefore no further action was taken,” Christian said.

“Probably clumsy was a good way to describe it, but certainly didn’t believe it got to our threshold of carelessness to warrant charge.”

He conceded that there can be a fine line between “clumsy” and careless conduct.

“There was lots of discussion about it,” he said.

“It’s a tough game, and it was in the cut and thrust of the moment, but we believe that there was no case to answer for Jeremy.”

Hayes was hit with a one-match ban for careless conduct with medium impact and high contact on Port Adelaide’s Dan Houston.

Jack Viney escaped a penalty for his dangerous tackle on Hawks skipper Ben Stratton, which Christian said should have been paid as a free kick.

Richmond AFLW utility Laura McClelland will be sidelined for two weeks in the biggest suspension handed down this women’s season.

In damning off-the-ball vision, McClelland was captured grabbing Giants opponent Britt Tully by the scruff of her jumper and slamming her head into the turf.

Tully was concussed and took no further part in the game.

“The action, because it was so far off the ball, was graded as intentional conduct,” Christian said.
