PLAYERS travelled to the Gold Coast from across southeast Queensland for the state claycourt junior championships at the weekend but it was two locals who claimed under-10 titles.
While the 271-player and 16-event tournament hosted by KDV Sport will run over two weekends, the “Talented Tens” finished their events in just two days.
KDV’s very own Elise Virr and Nikolai Yanochkin won the girls and boys singles titles respectively.
Both players train in the KDV Green Plus program.
For Elise, who turned 10 in January, it was tournament win No.4 this year.
Elise loved playing on her home courts, putting it down as “a fantastic opportunity for me to practise some of my shots my coach Sam Bradshaw has been teaching me and as a result it worked”.
Elise’s opponent in the finals was Pro-One’s Tori Russell. Sunday marked the fifth time the girls have played each other this year, with four of those in finals.
In the doubles, Tori and her partner Sofia Savic beat Elise, who teamed with Adison Murray.
Nikolai, 9, beat Platinum Tennis’s Jack Wilson in his final. Jack was also runner-up in the doubles with Brody Denny.
