Tweed Seagulls half Tarryn Aiken scores a try in South East Queensland’s big win

Electrifying rookie Tarryn Aiken is putting quite the case forward for higher honours.

ELECTRIFYING rookie Tarryn Aiken is putting quite the case forward for higher honours.

Aside from playing under-12s for Bilambil, Aiken is in her first season of rugby league.

The former Australian touch football representative has swiftly transferred her playmaking and organisational skills to play a starring role in the halves for club side Tweed.

Her form has seen her earn a chance in the South East Queensland halves alongside Ali Brigginshaw at the NRL Women’s Championship, scoring a try in the Water Dragons’ 44-0 win over Combined Affilated States on Friday.

If outstanding five-eighth Zahara Temara can’t overcome injury in time for the annual State of Origin showdown on June 21, Aiken shapes as a bolter.

Born in Gosford but a Maroons fan, the 19-year-old is not getting ahead of herself, instead simply relishing the chance to be part of a star-studded SEQ squad.

“It’s really an exciting opportunity playing with girls like Ali and Karina (Brown), I’m just learning heaps and soaking it up as much as I can,” said Aiken, who is being helped in SEQ camp by Temara.

SEQ coach Tahnee Norris was full of praise for Aiken.

“She’s so fast off the mark and gives a brilliant ball,” Norris said.

“She really searches for those holes and puts girls into some really good shape, so to do that in her first year of league, I think that’s awesome.”

SEQ will take on NSW City at Saturday 12pm at Pizzey Park.
