LESS than three months ago, Tweed and the CQ Capras shared the status of being rated the longest odds to win the 2019 Intrust Super Cup premiership.
Leading into Round 1, the Seagulls were considered $51 chances with Ladbrokes; as it has turned out, they are already five wins ahead of then title favourites Redcliffe after just 12 rounds.
Tweed took their fifth straight win on Sunday with a 42-8 belting of a dreadful Souths Logan outfit at Piggabeen Sports Complex.
Seagulls coach Ben Woolf agreed his side had surprised a few people with their 9-3 record.
“Oh for sure, I think we have. It’s a good indication that our roster has improved,” he said.
“Most of the guys that are there, were there last year. We added quality in (John) Palavi and (Christian) Hazard and managed to retain all of the blokes we wanted to retain and as a result, they have got a belief in themselves and are playing well.
“We’re not getting ahead of ourselves though. Finals footy was our aim at the start of the year and we’re definitely getting closer to that.”
Winger Lee Turner scored a try on debut while Talor Walters beat Max King to players’ player honours.
“Talor has really stepped his game up this year. He had three or four kick returns that he turned into line breaks,” Woolf said.
Sunshine Coast snapped Burleigh’s seven-game winning streak in a 32-16 scoreline.
