TWEED Seagulls are preparing for a “fired up” Burleigh outfit for the second edition of the SEQ women’s rugby league division one derby on Saturday.
Aside from Tweed’s two wins over lowly Toowoomba, their only other victory this year came in Round 4, when they shocked the four-time defending premiers at Pizzey Park.
This time around, it’s the Seagulls who are on home turf at Piggabeen Sports Complex and they’re bracing for a Burleigh ambush.
“It’s probably not forgotten so I’m sure they will come out fired up,” Tweed coach Kelvin Wright said with reference to that 22-18 win.
“I know it’s a game our players are really looking forward to as well.”
Though the wins have dried up since then, Tweed have remained highly competitive; they gave leaders Wests Brisbane a major scare last weekend in a 30-20 loss. The Panthers had beaten them by 40 the first time around.
That competitiveness has come despite a wave of injuries.
“A lot of players are probably playing a lot more than what was expected so there’s plenty of signs of improvement and we’re competing each week – you can’t ask for much more,” Wright said.
The Seagulls will welcome back prop CJ Sims and second-rower Jessika Elliston from representative duties, for Fiji and Queensland respectively.
Burleigh meanwhile are coming off a 62-6 demolition of Toowoomba in what was half Zahara Temara’s first game back from injury.
