THE Southport School First VIII have today established themselves as Head of the River contenders after finishing second in the open eight division race.

TSS finished only four seconds behind Brisbane rivals Nudgee in the third last regatta before the O’Connor Cup is decided on March 16.

The near win will instil confidence in the local crew after they were forced to miss out on important race practice last weekend as Cyclone Oma forced the scheduled regatta to be cancelled.

Southport couldn’t quite back up their performance from the first race, crossing the line fourth in the second open eight race and final event of the day.

Nudgee has now won all six races so far this season as they firm as hot favourites to take out the title in two weeks’ time.

TSS’s year nine division continues to impress after winning nine of the first eleven races of the day.

The school’s year 11 Third VIII won both of their races, making it five wins from six starts this season.

The year 10 division two quad won their second race of the day by less than a second in their first win of the season.

All crews will return to Wyaralong Rowing Centre next Saturday for the final regatta before the Head of the River showdown on March 16.
