WE LISTENED: SLSA REFUTE CLAIMS THEY IGNORE ATHLETES
Growing up in the same household as Australian ironman legend and father Trevor Hendy, a young TJ fantasised about racing in front of packed beaches as many more eyes watched on television.
But dwindling interest in surf life saving and the lack of a major free to air television deal meant that his dream hasn’t quite been a reality, until now.
As part of the new deal with Fox Sports, four rounds of the Nutri-Grain Series, as well as the new Nutri-Grain Iron X event will be broadcast live across the upcoming summer professional series, making the summer surf event elite once again.

“I’m really supportive of the series being professional again,” said Hendy, 24, who finished 14th in last summer’s Nutri-Grain series.
“I think it’s great that it’s on live TV again and that the Cooly Gold is in there as well and they’re investing in the Nutri-Grain series.
“I came to the sport with a dream to race in the stand alone series and where we had the chance to show off our skills and fitness.”
As for the introduction of stand up paddle boarding and cross-fit exercises as part of the stand-alone Iron X race, Hendy said he was open to embracing the new format.
“Right now it’s only one day and it’s not part of the series and I don’t have a problem with that,” he said.
“It’s a good chance to try something new and different with a bit of money on it so it could be some fun.”
