TIGERS CLAWING WAY BACK

With just one win in the first five rounds of the Kookaburra Cup, pre-season premiership fancies Southport Labrador looked in deep trouble just five weeks ago.

But having thrashed Palm Beach Currumbin on Saturday to extend their unbeaten streak to five games, the Tigers are now in the top four and looming as a title threat.

KANN STARTING TO HIT STRIDE

It’s been an up and down Queensland Premier Cricket season for Josh Kann so far but the Gold Coast Dolphins all-rounder showed glimpses of his top form again over the weekend.

The 20-year-old was instrumental in the Dolphins’ two Twenty20 wins in three games, highlighted by an unbeaten 74 from just 31 balls against Souths and a haul of 3-19 against Ipswich-Logan.

BEAMS LEADING DEMONS’ REVIVAL

After playing just a handful of games in second grade last season, Claye Beams has become a key figure in Surfers Paradise’s charge out of the Kookaburra Cup cellar.

The captain’s unbeaten 24 in Saturday’s 10-wicket thrashing of Coomera Hope Island took his season tally to 344 runs at an average of 43.

After collecting the 2018-19 wooden spoon, the Demons now sit fifth with five wins and four losses this season.

ROCKS AND DIAMONDS FOR FINS WOMEN

Entering Sunday’s crucial Katherine Raymont Shield Twenty20s with four wins and four losses, the Dolphins’ inconsistent form continued at Deagon.

Restricted to 9-93 in a losing effort against Sandgate-Redcliffe, they moved into the top four with a much-improved performance against University of Queensland.

HURRICANES SPIRALLING OUT OF CONTROL

Things are going from bad to worse for Alberton Ormeau, with last season’s Kookaburra Cup runners-up slumping to an eighth-straight loss at home to Broadbeach Robina on Saturday.

While all-rounder Shane Connors has already conceded their finals hopes are over, the Hurricanes must start winning soon to have any chance of avoiding the wooden spoon.
