Ten best Gold Coast QAFL players of the 2019 season

Palm Beach Currumbin brothers Stephen and Thomas Thynne lead an all-star cast of players who dominated in the 2019 QAFL season. With another season wrapped up, the Bulletin names its top 10 Gold Coast QAFL players of 2019.

PALM Beach Currumbin brothers Stephen and Thomas Thynne lead an all-star cast of players who dominated in the 2019 QAFL season.

Two Gold Coast teams faced off in the QAFL grand final for the fourth consecutive time this season.

Fourteen players from the Gold Coast clubs made the league’s team of the year while Palm Beach Currumbin coach Jess Sinclair was named coach of the year.

With another season wrapped up, the Bulletin names its top 10 Gold Coast QAFL players of 2019.

Thomas Thynne (Palm Beach Currumbin): He won the Syd Guildford trophy for the QAFL’s most valuable player by 31 votes and finished runner-up in the Grogan Medal by a point to Mt Gravatt’s Frazer Neate. A gun in the midfield who was at the top of the league’s most dominant team.

Stephen Thynne (Palm Beach Currumbin): Along with his brother, Stephen was a big reason why Palm Beach Currumbin were able to get their hands on the ball so much. Stephen probably showed his quality when he had time and space while Thomas did his best work in the contest.

Dylan Troutman (Palm Beach Currumbin): The halfback had a terrific season and capped it off by being named in the QAFL team of the year. A player who always stood tall in the biggest moments.

Jason Burge (Palm Beach Currumbin): Another Lion who was named in the league’s team of the year after a stellar season. Thrived at forward and led the Syd Guildford Trophy early in the season before injurying his foot.

Bryce Retzlaff (Labrador): One of the toughest forwards to play on in the QAFL and a terrific leader at the Tigers. Retzlaff kicked 36 goals, the fifth most in the competition. Broadbeach’s Jason Cloke (47 goals) and Jack Anthony (44 goals) also deserve mentions.

Alex McKay (Labrador): McKay has to be one of the best recruits of the 2019 season. McKay made a huge impact on the competition after shifting across from the Adelaide Football League. A hard working midfielder who shined despite his team’s struggles.

Jack Yelland (Surfers Paradise): Another top recruit in 2019. Yelland is a big-bodied midfielder who provided a different dimension for the Demons this season.

Brody Haberfield (Surfers Paradise): One of the toughest men in the league. Haberfield was a pillar in defence for Surfers Paradise and led by both his actions and words. Thoroughly deserved to add a premiership to his list of accolades.

Jackson Fisher (Broadbeach): Fisher was second in the voting for the Syd Guildford Trophy midway through the 2019 season, his first year of playing football in Queensland. A midfielder who accumulates the ball and goes forward to kick goals.

Josh Searl (Broadbeach): Produced some of the best form of his career this season. Searl enjoyed a rich vein of form throughout 2019 on the back of his ability to stay fit and healthy.
