Southport Sharks ruckman Jed Turner has stronger links to the NEAFL MVP than any other player

EVERY NEAFL MVP player has one thing — or man — in common. Southport ruckman Jed Turner is the man all potential MVP’s want to play with and if history is anything to go by, the Sharks are a shoe-in for this year’s top award.

EVERY NEAFL MVP player has one thing — or man — in common.

Southport ruckman Jed Turner is the man all potential MVP’s want to play with and if history is anything to go by, the Sharks are a shoe-in for this year’s top award.

Turner has played with every one of the four MVP recipients in their title-winning years since the award was established in 2014.

The 27-year-old rucked for Aspley when Matt Payne won the inaugural medal in 2014, was at Sydney University when Tom Young took the honours in 2015, went back to Aspley to lead Payne to another the following year before doing the same with Jordan Keras at Southport last year.

Turner was the man tapping the Sherrin to each of the successful midfielders and could be the unsung hero of the MVP awards.

“Every time one of those suckers win it I say it’s because I have come to the club,” Turner joked.

“It’s about time someone recognised it.”

Turner joked he sat the midfield group down at the start of the season and bartered with them to determine who he would supply more ball to.

“I just say I’ll guarantee them between 25 to 30 leading taps in their possession as long as I get some kickback from their match payment,” Turner said.

Southport midfielders Josh Clayton and Andrew Boston were coming third and fourth when the voting began to be withheld after Round 16.

“The boys were tracking quite well so I have been on the blower a fair bit to the other boys telling them to back off a bit because I need to keep my winning streak alive,” Turner said.

Turner may not win an MVP during his NEAFL career — despite believing he deserves one — but he said he would be happy to have it named after him after having the most influence in its winners.
