SHE’S only 21 years old, but last week, Shania Paine added a ninth straight OC1 outrigger canoe title to her impressive racing resume.
Paine, who competes for and is the president of the Gold Coast outrigger Canoe Club, has just returned from the 2019 national titles in Perth after taking out the women’s title.
Complicating her win is the fact Australia is divided into zones, meaning she had never raced against many of her competitors ahead of the 19km race.
“You don’t know the ability of the other girls going in so there were girls there from New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and Victoria,” she said.
“You don’t know the standard of the other girls and you’ve never raced any of them so it’s an unknown field.
“It was a little bit different from what we’re used to here (racing in Perth) but the wind picked up and we got a bit of surf.”

Paine, who trains 18 hours a week on and off the water, was ecstatic to add another title though said that her world title wins topped the Perth victory.
“It’s the last main event of the year,” she said.
“You train hard all year so to top it off with a win is the ultimate achievement.”
Paine, who has been paddling since the age of seven, was also elected president of her outrigger club earlier this year.
“It’s a bit of a trial to see how a younger person does in the role,” she said.
“I’m promoting myself as the face of the club because I’m still young and have already achieved a lot so I want to show others that you can go to the national titles.”
