OBTAINING Brisbane Women’s Premier League silverware won’t be the only objective for Robina City next season, with coach Ian Shaw eager to help his players take the next step in their careers.
A two-time Football Gold Coast Coach of the Year and premiership winner with Broadbeach United and Palm Beach, Shaw steered City to seventh spot in their debut BWPL campaign this year.
While he hopes they can build on that early platform, the former FIFA-appointed chairman of the Solomon Islands Football Federation and Capital Football technical director said there was more to his job than winning trophies.
‘WE CAN MATCH IT WITH THE BEST IN THE LEAGUE’ - UNITED STAR
“My role at Robina is to develop players for a higher level of football with Gold Coast United and W-League. Hayley Raso is a perfect example, from Palm Beach Soccer Club to Canberra United to the national team,” Shaw said.
“The decision Robina made to enter into the BWPL will help develop players for a higher level of play and confirms the club’s commitment to improve the women’s game on the Gold Coast, as well as offer a pathway for our 11 female teams.
“We are a competitive squad and improved as the season developed (this year). We provided first grade debuts for a number of players and they acquitted themselves admirably, I am looking forward to seeing those players develop and make an impact in the 2020 competition.”
The Rabbits’ quest for success could hardly be in safer hands.

Shaw played first grade football for 26 years, representing the Gold Coast in 1983 and ACT in 1985-95 and spending three years in the National Futsal League.
He then became the first coach to win an under-15 boys’ FFA national title for the ACT and has since spent time in numerous countries and completed part A of his AFC A-License.
“I’ve always felt I had something to offer football and coaching gives me the enjoyment of developing players and seeing them succeed,” Shaw, who will again be assisted by Matt Glew next season, said.
LANGDON TREATING EVERY GLORY CHANCE AS HIS LAST
“Touring with teams in Asia has expanded my knowledge and fostered an appreciation for development. I was fortunate to do my AFC C Licence and Golden Age Licence at the Japan Football Association headquarters in Fukushima.
“Watching and learning how the Japanese coach is insightful.”
Pre-season training for Robina’s BWPL team begins on November 26.
