RECORD NUMBERS
AN incredible eight girls and two boys were selected from the Gold Coast to represent Queensland South at the upcoming national titles.
North Gold Coast Seahawks have five representatives and Gold Coast three.
This is by far the most players on a state team for the Gold Coast. Players are selected from the entire south east Queensland area and I am very proud to see so many Coast kids achieving selection.
Seahawks GM Dwayne Vale said: “An incredible achievement for our association, five players is the most ever for us and all the girls families, coaches and our community should take great pride in this.
“With several girls in national squads, eyes will be focused on where the sporting careers for these players end up.”
The two boys selected, Preston LeGassick and Lloyd McVeigh, are teammates at The Southport School.
Under-18 South Queensland Women
Gold Coast: Skye Mason, Shorna Preston, Lilly Rotunno.
North Gold Coast:, Jessica Boundy, Indiah Bowyer, Ella Brow, Lil Dart, Katie Deeble.
Under-18 South Queensland Men
Gold Coast: Preston Le Gassick, Lloyd McVeigh.
The two Gold Coast teams faced off last weekend with Seahawks winning 57-52.
These teams played off for the bronze medal at the recent state championships with Gold Coast coming out on top.
The Seahawks had lost a heart-breaking semi-final the day before. There was plenty of drama before that game, with the Townsville team running late due to inclement weather and the game was delayed several times causing much controversy on and off the court.
Sadly the Seahawks girls let slip a late lead and their chances of a state title.
Seahawks were also playing without young gun Katie Deeble last weekend, so to get the win against the Gold Coast would have been especially sweet after the disappointment of the state champs.
BQJBC STARTING
Representative basketball starts this Saturday for under-12 and 14 teams across the southeast.
Gold Coast teams will be looking to start their season with a bang. Last year saw Gold Coast take home the overall champion trophy for BQJBC.
This was the first time the Gold Coast has won this title since its inception. With the quality of teams this year, Gold Coast should go close to taking home the chocolates once more. Best of luck to our future stars.
