Rain forces sporting carnage, some events still to make a call

UPDATE: ANOTHER code has pulled the pin on weekend plans, while other codes including rugby league and bowls nervously watch the skies.

FOOTBALL

NPL: Gold Coast United’s women’s and men’s state league games due to be played at Robina Station Reserve on Saturday have been postponed. The men’s match against Brisbane City will now be at 7.30pm on Tuesday. The women’s fixture could run during the middle of the season.

Mini Roos (Under-6-11s) due to start Saturday have been postponed.

Senior fixtures (pre-season competition) have been postponed for three weeks and due to run in March.

Four women’s games scheduled for Sunday will have a call made 12pm on Saturday.

AUSSIE RULES

The Gold Coast Suns’ Family Night Out originally scheduled for this afternoon at Bond University has been cancelled due to heavy rainfall.

More than 60mm of rain has already fallen across parts of the Gold Coast and according to forecasters more than 100mm is expected to fall on the Coast today.

Chief executive Mark Evans said it was unfortunate.

“We had staff out on site this morning and water had already began pooling around the venue and with the worst of the rain still to come, and with patron safety paramount, the decision was really taken out of our hands,” he said.

TRIATHLON

Luke Harrop Memorial: Officials will test water quality in the Broadwater ahead of the Gold Coast Triathlon on Sunday but the event will go on regardless. Any decree that water quality is too poor for swimmers will lead to the event being cut to a duathlon, with just the cycle and run legs completed. Precedent exists for the water quality in the Broadwater being deemed not up to standard after a deluge, with open water events cut from the Pan Pacific championships in 2014 after days of constant rain.

RACING

The Gold Coast race meeting at Aquis Park set down for today has been abandoned. The club will still operate bar and betting facilities.
