PALM Beach Currumbin are confident they are on the right Kookaburra Cup track despite a heartbreaking two-run loss to defending premiers Broadbeach Robina on Saturday.
Responding to the Cats’ 9-193 at Broadbeach Sports and Recreation Centre, Palm Beach looked capable of pulling off a minor upset needing 14 runs off the final over, before their pursuit came to an end at 7-191.
Openers Steve Baker (75) and Kyle Brockley (46) had earlier laid the platform for a sizeable Broadbeach total with a 107-run stand, before player-coach Ryan Kettle’s late surge to a haul of 5-33 dragged the Lions back into the contest.
‘IT’S A DIFFERENT FEELING WITH WHAT THAT RELATIONSHIP WAS BACK THEN’ - LARA
Kettle then continued his one-man demolition job with the bat, smashing 93 as part of an 89-run third-wicket stand with Jainam Patel (45) after surviving a new-ball onslaught from Brockley (3-35) and Reece McDonald (2-38).
But with middle-order wickets tumbling in the dying stages, it was left to Brent Anderson (12 not out) and tailender Max Williamson (7 not out) to guide the visitors home in the final over – an assignment that proved a bridge too far.
It was the third defeat in six one-day outings for Palm Beach and while Kettle said they were far from satisfied with that record, he believes the signs are positive.
CHANGES HELP CROC REDISCOVER BATTING BITE
“I think we’re progressing nicely. You expect Broadbeach to be one or two by the end of the season and we take some confidence out of knowing where we stand against the top couple (of teams),” Kettle, who now has 329 first grade runs this season at 54.83, said.
“It is good (to see improvement) and I told the boys that end of the game. Having three wins and three losses is not what we want to be but there’s been huge improvements in our one-day cricket over the last couple of years, especially with a young group.
“We’d like to have won one or two more games but one-day cricket is probably not out best form of cricket. We’re happy with how we’re going at the moment.
“The young guys are learning, they’re training hard and improving dramatically. We’ve improved a lot and I think we can take a lot of positives out of (Saturday’s game).”
FORMER TEST STAR OUTLINES KEY TO BRYANT’S BULLS QUEST
Palm Beach now sit fifth ahead of their first two-day game at home to Helensvale Pacific Pines starting on Saturday, while Broadbeach remain second.
Southport Labrador opener Harry Maher produced the standout individual performance of the weekend, smashing 131 from 90 balls in the Tigers’ 117-run win over winless Alberton Ormeau.
