’Our next superstar’ shines in Seahawks’ epic grand final win

A GOLD Coast basketballer has been hailed our next women’s basketball superstar after the point guard’s demolition job in the under-16 Premier League grand final.

KATIE Deeble has been hailed the Gold Coast’s next women’s basketball superstar after the point guard’s demolition job in the under-16 Premier League grand final.

After claiming second at the state titles earlier in the year, the Seahawks went one better on Saturday to down neighbours Gold Coast Waves 83-63 in Brisbane.

The decider of the Basketball Queensland junior competition was highlighted by Deeble’s 30-point haul, a rare feat at that level but one not lost on coach Paula Jansen.

“She led the team and was very strong,” she said.

“The Waves made an extra effort to defend her but she was hitting three-pointers, she finished off drives, she was just great.

“And it wasn’t just in the offence; her defence was good.”

With representative selections looming for Deeble, Jansen predicts her grand final ramraid is just the start.

“She is one of the best (talents we’ve seen),” she said.

“I think she is going to be one to watch over the next couple of years.”

Jansen also praised the development of Ella Brow, with the Seahawks success built on the back of a push to attract new players in 2018.
