NOBODY can stop Northcliffe.
That much has – yet again – been made abundantly clear after the surf lifesaving powerhouse yesterday stormed to a 16th successive Queensland title.
Northcliffe finished on 524 points, well clear of Alexandra Headland and Currumbin.
Northcliffe director of surf sports Mark Williams was ecstatic with another title.
“Today was our 16th win in a row so it’s always a great honour to win,” he said.
“It shows the depth of our club and that we have great athletes all the way from under 17’s to the open category.”
Williams, who revealed the clubs secret to success if great management and coaches, couldn’t single out a
“There were too many highlights,” he said.
“It’s hard to pick one event but it was a great team performance and a stepping stone for us to the Aussies in two weeks’ time.”
FROM WORK TO STATE TITLE FOR CHIEF LIFEGUARD
With a 16th national title on the line in two weeks, Williams believes his club has a strong chance of claiming a win on home soil in front of family and friends.
“It’s also going to be great to have it on the Gold Coast which will give us an advantage,” he said.
“There’s nothing like getting to stay home and sleep in your own bed during a very challenging event.
“For the next two weeks, we’ll be paddling down and training a lot at Broadbeach to learn the rips and banks down there.”
Despite their dominant national form, Williams said that Northcliffe would have to be wary of another Gold Coast powerhouse.
“A 16th consecutive title is our goal but we know we’re going to have a lot of competition from Currumbin,” he said.
“It’s always a good challenge and we have a good rivalry between us.
“We try to beat them and they try to beat us but it’s really exciting for the Gold Coast to have two of the most powerful surf life saving clubs in our city.”
