MUDGEERABA president John White insists coach David Thompson can lead an NPL Women’s revival in 2019 as the Wallabies confront the prospect of a wooden spoon in their debut campaign.
Desperate for their first win since a 5-0 thrashing of SWQ Thunder on April 22, Mudgeeraba slipped to the bottom of the ladder on Saturday with a 3-2 loss to the Thunder in Toowoomba.
It was the Wallabies’ 13th-straight defeat and the latest blow in a season in which they’ve conceded 162 goals and been forced to play without a full team on occasion.
However, White is confident Thompson, who returned to the club this season after a stint with the now-defunct Gold Coast City, is the man to turn around their fortunes.
COAST PLAYERS PREDICT EPL WINNERS AND LOSERS
“I’ve met a lot of people in my 25 years in football on the Coast and there’s no-one who could’ve done the job this year, bar Dave,” White said.
“It’s his love of football (that’s key). I’ve known him for a long, long time and … (with him) it’s not about winning, it’s about giving your best.
“It’s getting the best out of each person and getting them to achieve their goals, whether they’re the best player in the team or the worst. With Dave, he can get the best out of people and he’s just a nice bloke.
UNITED RIGHTING WRONGS OF PALMER ERA
“It hasn’t been a disappointing year by any means. The coaches have done really well (in the under-13, 15 and 17 girls’ NPL), they’ve done a great job with our juniors.”
The Wallabies now have just two games to climb off the bottom of the ladder.
On Sunday, Gold Coast United hammered Capalaba 5-0, with Deanna Thompson scoring a double and Mackenzie Akins, Phoebe Cave and Lara Byfield also finding the net.
