MUDGEERABA coach Wayne Forbes insists a grand-final showdown with this season’s most dominant force holds no fears for his side as they chase back-to-back Doug Lipp Cup premierships.
While the Redbacks have strung together finals victories over Southport (40-8), Burleigh (48-22) and Currumbin (24-10) to keep their title defence alive, Tugun will enter tomorrow’s 2pm decider at Pizzey Park on the back of a 10-game unbeaten run that carried them to the minor premiership.
MUDGEERABA TO MAKE HISTORY IN 2020
The Seahawks lost just three times during the regular season, racking up a competition-high 520 points before booking their grand final ticket with a 32-16 defeat of Currumbin two weeks ago.
However, with confidence sky-high at Mudgeeraba, Forbes believes his troops can again emerge as Rugby League Gold Coast’s reserve grade champions.
“We have worked hard during the back quarter of the season to ensure we peak at the pointy end. We have won all three sudden death games of the final series to date quite convincingly, beating second, third and fifth,” Forbes said.
“Our for-and-against record speaks for itself. For the three final series games it sits at 112 for and 40 against (so) we are battle fit.
FIXTURE CLASH FORCES RLGC GRAND FINAL CHANGE
“We are not concerned about preparing for Tugun at all. Our focus is solely directed at keeping our engines greased, our fire burning and our blood pumping, not who we are playing.”
Having overcome Currumbin in the biggest game of 2018, Forbes said the grand final experience within his squad would be invaluable.
“We have several players who will be playing in their third grand final in a row, a few that will be playing in their fourth in a row and it will be my fifth. So we have plenty of big game experience on board,” he said.
“Mudgee love is well and truly alive and booming. We aren’t just a footy team, we are a family, a community, an emerging force.

“Just like last grand final day last year, I am sure the Mudgee fans will outnumber any other club.”
