Sitting sixth after crawling out of the Gold Coast Premier League blocks, the perennial finalists needed all of their experience to overcome Tweed United 2-1 on the road on Saturday.

The Marlins’ only point over the first seven rounds came from a 2-2 draw when the sides met in the season opener and they again looked capable of an upset when Tom Sutton gave them a 1-0 lead midway through the first half.

But two goals from Josh Riis either side of halftime saved the Dolphins’ blushes and momentarily catapulted them inside the competition’s top four.

“The win was huge, especially away from home at Tweed. No-one likes going down there, especially when it’s raining and wet, so I think we needed the win to turn the corner and open a new book,” Riis, whose brace took his season tally to four goals, said.

“Coming into Round 2, I think it will put a heap of momentum under the boys and it will carry through to the end of the season now. We’ve had such a slow start, one of the worst starts we’ve had in 10 years.

“I think the second round we’ll push for a top four position and be a bit more competitive with a few lads coming back from injury. The squad’s getting a bit bigger now so I think we were just running on fumes in the first round.

“The goal for us is just to take each match as it comes and win every game, I think that’s the requirement now. I think it will be an interesting end to the season.”

The Dolphins must now deal with a hectic schedule featuring games against Burleigh (May 11), Surfers Paradise (May 14) and Nerang (May 18), while Tweed travel to Surfers Paradise on Saturday.
