While Queens’ Winton brothers Jack, Sam and Harry have left their mark on Cricket Gold Coast’s first grade competition in recent years, the Lickiss siblings of the same names could hold the key to Helensvale Pacific Pines’ 2019-20 fortunes.

Captain and top-order batsman Jack, 23, and all-rounder Harry, 18, have already helped the Hawks to back-to-back wins to start the season, while Sam, 21, has so far been forced to bide his time in second grade.

But having spent all of 2018-19 together as Helensvale finished eighth, Jack said the brothers had taken it upon themselves to lead a first-grade revival.

“Last year was the first time we’d spent the whole season in the same team - Sam and I played a lot of juniors (together) growing up – so it was nice to run out on the park with the two of them. It was just a good experience and good fun,” Jack said.

“Harry has really taken a step up this season and he’s the leader of our attack with the ball. Hopefully Sam gets into some good form and can build on that.

“Your performances talk so hopefully not just him but there’s a few guys around the second grade group that are fringe first grade players and it’s always healthy building competition for spots.

“I think we’re really going to be a force in a couple of years when we start hitting our straps. It’s exciting.”

Coming off victories over Coomera Hope Island and Palm Beach Currumbin, the Hawks will face their biggest test to date when they travel to Mudgeeraba Nerang for tomorrow’s one-day encounter.

A member of the Hawks outfit that fell to Burleigh in the 2017-18 grand final, Jack said he was all too aware premierships aren’t won in October.

“We’ve started pretty well but we’re certainly not getting ahead of ourselves and we’ve got a tough game against Mudgeeraba, who will be really strong this year. We’re savouring (the wins) but not getting ahead of ourselves,” he said.

“It’s definitely something we spoke about, making sure we got off to the best possible start. Once you start winning games you get on a roll a little bit. Winning becomes a habit and infectious.”
