AFTER coming second at the inflatable rescue boat Aussies last month, Kurrawa have muscled out fellow Gold Coast rivals and national champions Kirra Beach to take out the Queensland title on the weekend.
A string of consistent performances over the two days of competition saw Kurrawa finish on 121 points to seal the state win ahead of Kirra (72 points) and Broadbeach (47 points).
After the Queensland championships were postponed due to unfavourable conditions last month, Kurrawa IRB coach Scott Wheeler said it was pleasing to finish the surf life saving season on a high.
“We weren’t disappointed with second at the Aussies,” he said.
“We were beaten by the better team on the day.
“It’s always good to have a win at the last carnival of the year.
“I think we had something like 16 medals in 18 events.”
Wheeler admitted that it was challenging to have to continue training in light of their Aussies success after the State titles were postponed until after the national title was decided.
“Coming back after the Aussies and having to prepare for the State titles was hard,” he said.
“We did well at the Aussies but then had to back it up not knowing how we might go and we were missing a few people.”
After winning all four Ocean Roar IRB series rounds and now adding a state championship to their trophy cabinet, Wheeler said he was excited for the future with a number of the club’s emerging IRB talents paving the way to victory.
“Kirra raced really well on the weekend and put a lot of pressure on us but that made our guys push harder,” he said.
“We’ve had massive improvement from our young kids at Kurrawa who have grown up at the club and are now winning state and national titles.
“It’s validation for what we’re doing at the club and the sport as a whole is going great.”
