Keebra Park enjoying influx of rugby talent from Western Australia such as Trey Peni

“GREAT sportsmen come from all over the place.” Those are the words of Keebra Park rugby league coach Glen Campbell and they certainly have been ringing true in the Southport-based school’s case.

“GREAT sportsmen come from all over the place.”

Those are the words of Keebra Park rugby league coach Glen Campbell and they certainly have been ringing true in the Southport-based school’s case.

Keebra have had an influx of talent join their ranks from Western Australia, headlined by winger Trey Peni.

LAST WEEK’S MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

“It’s surprising the amount of kids that have come out of Western Australia to chance their hand basically,” Campbell said ahead of their highly anticipated showdown with Palm Beach Currumbin on Wednesday night.

“It started off coincidental but then I think families spoke to one another and they followed suit and chose Keebra Park thankfully.

“We have seen some very good footballers come across from the west that are trying to further their development.”

Peni, 17, has come along in leaps and bounds since making the bold move away from family to link up with Keebra.

Originally from New Zealand, Peni first learnt of rugby league in a six-month stint living in Brisbane nearly a decade ago.

He later stuck with the 13-a-side code in the nation’s west before relocating to the Gold Coast with his aunty and cousin at age 14 in a bid to make a career out of footy.

“It was the sacrifice I needed to make to pursue what I want to do,” he said.

“This is my first year of playing As (for Keebra) and making any kind of rep teams.

“It’s always been a goal to play As ever since I got here really. I always have looked up to them and now I’m finally playing in it.”

The winner of the Keebra v PBC match at Pizzey Park – which can be viewed via a live stream with commentary on goldcoastbulletin.com.au – will likely be crowned Allan Langer Cup champions.
