Jack Sinfield and Cody Durante partnership helps The Southport School beat Toowoomba Grammar

A superb all-round display by young gun Jack Sinfield has again helped The Southport School out of a tight spot in the GPS cricket competition.

A SUPERB all-round display by young gun Jack Sinfield has again helped The Southport School out of a tight spot in the GPS cricket competition.

Sinfield strode to the wicket at 6-86 on Saturday as Toowoomba Grammar’s bowlers put the hosts under immense pressure on a flat track; from there, he and wicketkeeper-batsman Cody Durante (65) combined for a match-turning 80-run stand.

TSS were back in trouble when both players were runout in a collapse of 3-1 that also removed Ky Newitt before tailenders Kye Shield (15 not out) and Peter Lynch (22) pushed the score to 206.

NORTHS FIGHTBACK NOT ENOUGH AGAINST DOLPHINS

“We bat deep. Everyone can hold a bat in the team so that’s a big play for us,” said TSS director of cricket Steve Baker.

“We’ve had to use that (depth) again.

“We were in early trouble. The batting of Jack Sinfield and Cody Durante really got us out of a spot, what they were able to do to turn the momentum around.

BURLEIGH MOVING ON FROM ‘DRAINING’ SCANDAL

“(Then) Peter Lynch and Kye Shield, what they did to get us to 200, that was the real difference again.”

Sinfield, who is only in Year 10, backed up his 56-ball 41 by claiming three top order scalps in a fine spell of 3-27 off 10 overs.

“He had to bowl into the wind which was really, really difficult – that he was able to get the figures he got is a fair testament to him,” Baker added.

Fellow off-spinner Ky Newitt took 3-36 to bowl TGS out for 174, sealing a 32-run victory.

TSS’ chief premiership rival Nudgee College survived a scare, holding on for a one-run win over Ipswich Grammar.
