GOLD Coast’s Brisbane Women’s Premier League pioneers are relishing every moment of their debut campaigns, despite fluctuating fortunes over the opening five rounds.
While 2018 Gold Coast double winners Broadbeach United have made a seamless transition to Brisbane with three wins and a draw from their four games, Southport, Coomera and Robina City remain works in progress.
‘I’M NOT A PLAYER WHO CAN HANDLE THAT’ - FOOTBALL PODCAST
After a three-game unbeaten run, Southport crashed back to earth with a 5-0 loss to The Lakes in Round 4 and slumped to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of University of Queensland last weekend.
But morale within the squad remains high.
“(Last week) was a great test but I wasn’t unhappy with our performance,” coach Trent Gregson said.
“UQ deserved the win, they were a really classy side. We did make some critical errors in our final third and UQ capitalised on them very well.
“We knew it was going to be a tough season but all the players are definitely up for it. As one of the ladies said (after the UQ result), we would much rather lose playing against quality like that then be winning games by double digits like last season.”
BAMBACH OPENS UP ABOUT SUDDEN UNITED DEPARTURE
Coomera’s fortunes have so far followed an opposite path, losing their first two games before drawing with Virginia United and breaking their duck with a 4-0 triumph over North Brisbane in Round 5.
“The girls played well (last weekend). Our finishing is still not there – we had 22 shots and only scored four goals - but I’m happy for our first three points,” coach Archy Kahondo said.
“We need to build onto this with a massive game away against a very strong Peninsula Power (on Saturday).”
At Robina, new coach Ian Shaw has worked to rebuild a City side rocked by a 6-0 loss to the Power in their season opener.
Since then, they have picked up two wins, a draw and a last-start 1-0 loss to Broadbeach.
“The first week we had six or seven players out so it was never going to be the best debut for us,” Shaw said.

“We’ve brought in a different style of play and the players have adapted superbly. They’re taking on ideas and that’s the whole thing about coaching, players have to be adaptable and the Robina players have shown that.
“I just think the team’s reaching their football potential at the moment.”
