Gold Coast Muay Thai veteran John Wayne Parr ready to make his mark against Anthony Mundine

“I’ll be in his face and he is going to have the sensation that he is drowning in my overall aggression.”

JOHN Wayne Parr’s last professional boxing bout was 16 years ago but the Gold Coast Muay Thai veteran is confident that he’ll have no trouble in shutting down Anthony Mundine later this year.

The duo are set to meet in November, possibly on the Gold Coast, in what will be the biggest fight of Parr’s career.

So long has the 43-year-old been out of the professional boxing scene he has been scouring through eBay in search of shoes for the occasion.

Nevertheless, he had no hesitation in accepting an offer to fight the divisive Mundine when he got a call out of the blue from promoter Steve Wijangco.

“Within a matter of only seven days my world has turned upside down,” Parr said.

“Between Muay Thai and boxing I have had 145 fights and I’ve never got this amount of exposure ever so it’s nice to finally be put on the map.”

The man who operates a gym in Burleigh Heads has been busily preparing for a crack at his 100th Muay Thai win when he takes on Danilo Zanolini in Nagoya, Japan on August 18.

“Boxing is such a big part of Muay Thai anyway, I win the majority of my fights with my hands so I’m constantly trying to improve my boxing skills every single day … so it’s not like I’m going into enemy territory for the first time, I have been doing this my whole life,” Parr said.

He praised Mundine for the publicity he has brought to the sport but won’t be going easy on “The Man”, who is now 44.

“You have got boxers and then you have got fighters. Boxers stay on the outside and like to look pretty whereas I’m a volume fighter,” Parr said.

“I’ll be in his face and he is going to have the sensation that he is drowning in my overall aggression.

“He is starting to wind down his career now. If I was fighting the Mundine from 10 years ago, I think it would be a very difficult fight but I think right now with what’s happening, I believe that I’m going to have the edge and that I’m going to stop him.

“The best part of this fight is without me doing anything, I’m already the good guy.

“People that don’t know me, they’re already cheering for me.

“I’m not going to talk any shit, that’s his thing. I’ve been known throughout my career as the good guy, I have always got time for people, I like helping people, I like being polite, I don’t badmouth people, I let my fighting do the talking.

“What I lack in hype, I make up for it with exciting fights.”
