JACK Winton has completed a huge double with honours in the Kookaburra Cup player of the year and sharing the Queens club award with Jimmy Spargo.

The 25-year-old all-rounder was a key figure as Queens marched to the 2016-17 title and was subsequently named Sam Loxton Medal winner, an award decided on the votes of umpires.

In the Cricket Gold Coast awards night at the Nerang RSL, Winton polled 18 votes and finished two ahead of his Queens clubmate Jimmy Spargo.

There was a three-way tie for third involving Sam Day (Surfers Paradise), Mitch Daly (Mudgeeraba-Nerang) and Ryan Maloney (Helensvale-Pacific Pines).

Then it was on to Saturday night and Winton, one of three brothers who play for Queens, shared the Centaurs’ best player award with Spargo.

In claiming the award, Winton emulated the deeds of his father Brad who won it twice in the early 1990s.

“I thought I would be up there with Jimmy for the club award but it was a bit of a shock to get the Sam Loxton Medal,” Winton said.

“It was the first decent season I’ve had since I started in first grade and I’m just stoked.”

During the Queens’ charge to the 2016-17 title, Winton scored 499 runs at 38.58 average and took 35 wickets at 9.83 average, the best in Kookaburra Cup first grade.

Winton will not be tempted to have a go at Brisbane Premier Grade next season.

He wants to join his brothers Sam and Harry and play together for Queensland Country.

The other first grade honours went to Andrew Robinson (Coomera-Hope Island) who scored the most runs with 803 and Southport-Labrador skipper Nic Peterson took out the best average with 75.43.

In bowling Brad Ipson (CHI) took 49 wickets and Jack Winton’s 9.65 average was the best in that category.
