The drought is over: The Eagles have finally broken through for their maiden Gold Coast District Rugby Union first grade win in 2019.

THE drought is over: The Eagles have finally broken through for their maiden Gold Coast District Rugby Union first grade win in 2019.

The Eagles had not tasted victory since their stunning elimination final victory over Helensvale last September, dropping their first nine games this season.

That horror run was snapped by a 15-10 upset of fourth-placed Nerang at James Overell Park on Saturday.

“We’re just happy,” was Eagles skipper Nixon Taramai’s reaction.

“It has been a tough season but we were glad to get that one.”

The Southport club came from 10-3 down to take the points a week after losing in heartbreaking fashion to Bond Pirates.

Now, all of a sudden, the task of overhauling the Bulls to jump into the top four by season’s end is not out of the question.

“I know finals is the big picture but we’re still taking it one week at a time and are just focusing on what we can do for next week,” Taramai, 23, said.

“This win has helped our morale and what not because all our hard work has come to this.”

The Eagles face a tough ask to go back-to-back, given their next opponent is Taramai’s former club Griffith University Colleges, who shored up their hold on top spot with a 36-20 win over Helensvale on Saturday.

Surfers Paradise moved into outright second on the ladder with a 34-10 defeat of Bond Pirates.
