Gold Coast Dolphins sack first grade coach Jerry Cassell

GOLD Coast Dolphins coach Jerry Cassell has been sacked by the club less than half way through the season. Hear from both Cassell and Dolphins president Jeff Pfaff here.

THE identity of the Gold Coast Dolphins next first grade coach remains unclear following the axing of Jerry Cassell.

The club is yet to announce if they will replace Cassell after club bosses decided to sack the former Queensland Bulls player ahead of the Dolphins Round 8 loss to Sandgate-Redcliffe at Trevor Hohns Oval.

It is understood the list of candidates is slim and it remains to be seen if the club decides to push on without a senior coach for the rest of the 2018-19 season.

Dolphins president Jeff Pfaff declined to comment about the shock decision but alluded to a deeper falling out between the pair.

“There is a story to tell,” Pfaff said.

“You will get one side of it but there will be a truth so you will have to come to me for that.”

Cassell also kept his cards close to his chest but said he had enjoyed coaching the team throughout the opening stages of the 2018-19 season.

“They didn’t want my services so that is the way it’s gone,” Cassell said.

“I haven’t really got much to say on it. They have their reasons and I obviously disagree with them. I can’t (elaborate) on it further.

I enjoyed coaching the boys but there are some things going on that need to be cleaned up.”

When asked if Cassell wanted to keep coaching on the Gold Coast he said: “I have some other things in place so I’ll just do my thing. It’s all good.”

Cassell was named the Dolphins coach in June this year, with the former Queensland Bulls batsman replacing club legend Damian Wallis in the role.

Gold Coast won the toss in their two-day match against Sandgate-Redcliffe and posted a total of 255 runs on Saturday.

But Sangate-Redcliffe cruised to victory on day two of play on Sunday, with Bryce Street (104 runs) and Zac Keune (91 runs) helping guide the side to 9/307.
