MATTHEW Mott will rekindle fond memories of his younger days when he returns to Gold Coast Dolphins headquarters at Bill Pippen Oval tomorrow.
Kerrydale, as the ground was known when he started with the Dolphins as an under-18 player, will host centre-wicket training for the Australian Southern Stars squad tomorrow and Saturday.
Mott, who played Sheffield Shield for Queensland and Victoria as a product of the Palm Beach-Currumbin Lions, has been coaching the Southern Stars for about 16 months.
And the former left-hand opener will relish his return to the ground which started his Brisbane grade career.
Mott was in the Dolphins under-18s for the first QCA club match and he recalls the days he shared in the same side as Andrew Symonds, the Dolphins’ most famous product.
Inside the Kerrydale clubrooms is a framed scorebook page, one that shows Symonds and Mott scoring “retired” double centuries in a 50-overs match against South Brisbane when the Dolphins scored more than 550 runs.
“I remember that very well,” Mott said.
“It is amazing how many people you run into who have seen that scorebook page and it brings back great memories for me.
“Symo went on to a big international career and I played Shield for Queensland and Victoria.”
Mott also went on to coach NSW and Glamorgan but now the focus is on the Southern Stars who have the two centre-wicket sessions at Bill Pippen Oval starting tomorrow (10am-3.30pm) and on Saturday (10am-1pm).
“I’m loving it, it’s a good challenge,” Mott said of his time with the Stars who lost the last women’s World T20 Cup to West Indies.
Mott also had a brief return to Kerrydale when he was the Ireland assistant coach for the last World Cup campaign.
