Due to the unprecedented outcomes of COVID-19, Basketball Queensland made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s awards ceremony but announced the news on Friday.
Celebrating 60 Years as an association, Gold Coast Basketball focused on many vital directions including improving overall performance in junior and senior competitions and as of 2019 is the only association that has an intellectually Disabled (Allstarz) and Wheelchair basketball program (Rollerblaze) now under its banner.
Gold Coast Basketball’s efforts on the floor are highlighted by the efforts of the under 14 girls Waves team who won Bronze at the Australian Club Championships, defending their recent Gold national title from the year before. Strength in performance was also demonstrated through the associations first BQJBC overall title as well as the best QBL season for the association in 20 years, with both teams making the Grand Final. All on-court performance was overseen by Pero Cameron, newly appointed national Men’s coach for New Zealand.
Off the court, board members and key volunteers worked together to grow the association, embrace new technology and diversify income streams to ensure the longevity and diversity of their association for many years to come.
BEHIND THE BLAZE: BASKETBALL SERIES
“To go back to back on our 60 year anniversary, you couldn’t have asked for a better year to do it,” President Jimmy Williams said.
“We’ll field two Queensland State League teams this year and we have some great rep teams coming through the ranks so it’s an exciting time for Gold Coast Basketball.
“To win it twice is amazing and humbling but we’ll definitely be striving for three in a row.”
Williams thanked the association’s clubs, volunteer coaches and managers, referees, staff and board members for their efforts - all who celebrated the award via video conference on Friday.
