Fuming Southport vow to fight Premier League snub

SOUTHPORT’S board will meet to discuss whether they will appeal Football Gold Coast’s decision to readmit Tweed United into the 2019 Premier League.

SOUTHPORT’S board will meet on Monday night to discuss whether they will appeal Football Gold Coast’s decision to readmit Tweed United into the 2019 Premier League.

The Warriors were left devastated yesterday when FGC opted to reinstate Tweed into next season’s top flight, ahead of them and fellow Coast League One side Musgrave.

Believing the club had a legitimate claim to a Premier League spot after losing to Mudgeeraba in the playoff final in August, Southport president Gerry Glaser said the club would now be “looking into all our options”.

“We’re not happy about it. We have got a board meeting on Monday night at which we will be discussing this matter and where we go,” Glaser said.

“(FGC) just said they’d made the decision they were going to stay with an eight-team competition and because a southern club in Murwillumbah had left the Premier League, they felt it appropriate to leave a southern team in there in Tweed.

“(But) you should be there on merit, rather than location. That’s not really an acceptable reason to put teams in the Premier League.

“We can’t do anything about it at this point in time. Even if (FGC tell us) we can’t appeal it, we will put an appeal in anyway if that’s what the board decides.”
