He’ll be 39 when the 2016-17 Kookaburra Cup season starts but evergreen leg-spinner Wayne Phillips certainly has no thoughts of hanging up the creams.

Born and bred on the Gold Coast, Phillips has been around the scene for years – almost a quarter of a century, in fact – and is playing in his 299th first grade game for Surfers Paradise.

Flipper, as Phillips is known, is set for his 300th when Surfers host Southport-Labrador at David Johnston Oval on February 27-March 5.

Phillips warmed up for his big milestone by taking 6-46 on the first day of the Surfers-Palm Beach clash at Salk Oval on Saturday.

Phillips played his first A grade game with Mudgeeraba as a 14-year-old when the Bushmen played their initial season at their new Nielsens Rd headquarters.

“I played 234 games with Mudgeeraba and that covered 19 years,” Phillips said.

After that he helped the emergence of Burleigh where he played 38 games in three seasons, then he switched to Surfers where he is playing his 27th match.

There is a lot of Mudgeeraba in Phillips. The club, founded in 1886, was where his father John played in the days when Broadbeach Oval was its home base.

“I reckon I have taken roughly 573 wickets in my time and bowled nearly 3000 overs,” Phillips said, revealing that he was an opening bowler as a youngster.

“My best memory? That was probably winning my first premiership with Mudgee in 2006-07 under Shamus Robertson. We won another one in 2009-10 when Cameron Garnham was captain-coach.”

As for the future, Phillips does not want to draw stumps just yet.

“No, I’ll go on,” he said. “I’ve got a young son (Hunter) who’s playing under-14s at the moment. I want to be around with him for a while.”
