Demon call time on QAFL career

The career of a Gold Coast football veteran is set to come to a close at Surfers Paradise.

THE career of a Gold Coast football veteran is set to come to a close with Surfers Paradise forward Dan Green announcing his retirement.

The 2019 QAFL season will be Green’s last, with the beloved clubman telling teammates before the current finals campaign that he would be hanging up the boots after 28 years in the game.

10 JUNIORS TO WATCH IN COAST GRAND FINALS

The Demons will play Morningside in the QAFL preliminary final this Saturday to determine who will face Palm Beach Currumbin in the premiership decider at Metricon Stadium the following week.

Apart from three seasons with Broadbeach between the age of 17 and 20, Green, 32, has played for Surfers Paradise all his career.

Green started at the Demons, where his father and uncle both played, at the age of 4 and said he felt it was finally time to call it a day.

“I want to start spending more time with the family,” Green said.

“I have three young kids and I feel like it’s time. My body is getting a bit sore now too.”

Demons coach Brad Moore has said Green brought a presence to the team on top of his natural ability that made his teammates walk taller when he was around.

Green has won a reserves premiership with both Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach but has never featured in a senior grand final. He hopes to change that this year.

10 FACTORS BEHIND SUNS’ SORRY SEASON

“It would be a great way to finish off my footy career,” Green said.

“That would be something pretty special. To play with my brother Matt (Green) would make it even better.

“He plays in the forward line too and it’s been special playing the last couple of years with him.”

Green said the Demons had become a second home for him throughout his life and felt privileged to be part of the club’s growth into a force in the state league.

“I have grown up with a lot of the guys and played juniors with a lot of them. I’ve spent a lot of time here,” Green said.

“A lot of our development as a club has come off the back of hard work and effort from the whole footy club from management, coaching and the players.

“We have good, local talent coming through. It’s a special time to be part of the club.”
